Architecture School

Over my Internet life-span (LOL) i have had MANY questions about Architecture & people wanting to know more about it, as well as what it entails :)
For all of you that do not know,
I study Architecture at University, which would be college/school :)
I have been doing it for a year now & absolutely love it!
When i first graduated high school, i went into Engineering at Univeristy, but after a semester, i found it just was not for me, even though i had always wanted to beome an engineer.
Then my mum & brother suggested i try out Architecture.
I gave it a go & have never looked back.
I love my course, i love the people & i love what i do :)
A great discussion board i have found is:

Check it out to find out what Architecutre school is! :)
It is all so true! exactly to the last detail!

  2. Hi Holly,

I went to architecture school as well, here in the US. I graduated back in May 2008. Schooling itself is really fun, but make sure you do internships/junior architect jobs when you have a chance so that you can get a taste of what the professional world is like. It's completely different... and definitely not as fun (at least in my experience).

I'm not sure what it's like over where you live, but here in the US there are pretty much no jobs for architects. I heard something like 48% unemployment rate. I myself was laid-off last year and am now working in a job that has nothing to do with architecture... I wish things were better for us but it's a fickle field when the economy is low.

  3. Hi Meghan!
i really really would love to get some work experience, but have no idea of how to go about it.
Would you have any advice on how i should go about it? (email companies, ring?)
With employment here, our economy is actually great compared to the U.S which is very lucky for us. Though i have always wanted to work in the U.S :(

  4. Holly,

Do you guys have job fairs? At my school, we had architecture firms come for the career fair at our school, and we'd be able to put together our portfolios, resumes, etc. and then talk to the arch firm representatives/recruiters. It made is really easy to connect with a bunch of firms and get the ball rolling. If this isn't an option for you, then I'd suggest putting together a portfolio, a resume (and having someone look over both of these for insightful critiques) and then sending out cover-letters/resumes/portfolio samples via email, or possibly regular mail if you prefer. Send to firms you are interested in, or that you've seen them post employment opportunities and think they might be hiring.

Also-- try to network with professionals. Networking, and knowing the right people, is truly the key in getting where you want to go. This is my biggest challenge! I am trying to force myself to network more so that I can hopefully find hidden opportunities!
